Dental care for children
Children’s dentistry: good habits begin with a good first experience.
Early appointments are deliberately simple. Your child can meet the team, sit in the chair if they wish and become familiar with the room before we expect too much from them.
As confidence grows, we check development, look for early decay and give practical advice on brushing, snacks and fluoride. We explain everything in age-appropriate language and involve parents throughout.
Bring your child to see us for…
- a relaxed first visit from their first tooth or first birthday
- regular checks as adult teeth begin to appear
- help with brushing, diet, dental anxiety or a tooth concern
Common questions
Helping children feel comfortable
What if my child will not open their mouth?
That is all right. Building trust is useful progress in itself, and we can try again another day without making the visit feel like a failure.
Can I stay in the room?
Yes. Parents and carers are welcome, and we will show you how to support a calm appointment.
When should my child first see a dentist?
As soon as their first tooth appears, and certainly by their first birthday. It is a short, friendly visit for them to get used to the room and for you to ask about brushing, teething, dummies and drinks.
How much toothpaste should my child use?
From the first tooth, brush twice a day with a smear of fluoride toothpaste; from about three years old, use a pea-sized amount. Children should spit rather than rinse, and an adult should help with brushing until around the age of seven.
My child is scared of the dentist. How do you help?
We keep early visits short and let your child lead: they can look around, hold the mirror and see each instrument before it is used. Tell us beforehand what worries them, because a small detail like a noise or a bright light can make a big difference.
