Puppy grooming and nervous dogs

A dog that is frightened of the groomer at one year old usually had its first groom done too fast. Puppy grooming here, in a quiet one-dog salon in Moygashel, Dungannon, is slow on purpose.

First puppy groom £20

Who it suits

  • Puppies from twelve weeks, once their second vaccinations are done.
  • Rescue dogs, and dogs who had a bad time at a groomer before.
  • Older dogs with stiff joints who cannot stand for two hours any more.

What happens at a puppy groom

  1. Meet the room

Sniff about, have a treat, hear the dryer switched on at the other end of the salon. Nothing else, if that is all they are ready for.

  2. A little at a time

A warm bath, a gentle dry on low, a brush, a nail or two. The buzz of the clippers held near the paws without cutting anything.

  3. Stop while it is going well

The visit ends on a good minute, not a bad one. Three or four of these and most puppies walk in wagging.

  4. You can stay

For the first visit, you are welcome to sit in. For nervous dogs, I will tell you honestly whether they settle better with you there or without.

Tell me the breed and roughly when the last groom was, and you will get a day and a price back. Mid-groom it goes to voicemail — I ring back between dogs.
